A tree planted in red soil
Grows towards the blue sky
On top and within is the sun
The white light flutters its top
And infiltrates.
The tree first appeared in my work in painting (Shalom Hagalil, 1983) in the context of loss and bereavement, as a metaphor to man tied to earth in a relationship of nourishing and being nourished and the eternal aspiration to heaven. The tree was painted, or rather came to life on canvas as a result of playing with the three primary colors and white is a necessary addition. Its brown trunk is nourished from the red-earth, the blue-sky and the yellow-sun and white tension combs through with the light in the air.
